Why Compliance Matters for Irish Businesses
Your business meets legal and insurance requirements
Irish commercial insurers and local Fire Officers require verifiable I.S. 291 service certificates and an up-to-date Fire Safety Register as a condition of policy validity.
Fire safety systems perform reliably when needed
Annual pressure, valve, weight, and internal cylinder inspections eliminate the risk of depressurised or corroded units failing during a critical workplace emergency.
Staff and property are properly protected
Matching exact extinguisher classes (Water, Foam, CO₂, Powder, Wet Chemical) to real workplace hazards ensures staff can tackle early-stage fires without personal risk.
You avoid costly penalties or risks associated with non-compliance
Proactive scheduled maintenance prevents HSA improvement notices, Fire Authority prohibition orders, invalidated insurance claims, and operational downtime.

Certified Equipment Backed by Practical Staff Fire Training
Legal Requirements for Fire Safety in Ireland
The Health and Safety Authority requires all employers to comply with current fire safety legislation and standards across all commercial premises.
Fire Services Act 1981–2003
Fire-fighting equipment must be provided and accessible so employees can tackle a fire in its early stages without putting themselves at risk. Equipment must be suitable for the hazards present, and staff must receive proper training in its use.
- Provide accessible, unobstructed fire-fighting equipment across all floor levels
- Match extinguisher agents directly to the specific fire hazards present on site
- Ensure employees receive practical training in safe early-stage extinguisher use
- Maintain clear emergency escape routes free of combustible obstructions
Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005
The Health and Safety Authority requires all employers to comply with current fire safety legislation and standards. Maintaining a fire safety register for all business premises is also a legal requirement.
- Carry out documented workplace fire risk assessments
- Implement effective fire prevention and detection measures
- Ensure safe, illuminated emergency escape routes and exits
- Provide appropriate fire-fighting equipment and staff safety training
- Maintain an up-to-date Fire Safety Register on the premises at all times
I.S. 291: 2015 Fire Extinguishers
This Irish standard outlines the mandatory rules for the selection, commissioning, servicing, and maintenance of portable fire equipment across all commercial and institutional premises.
- Fire extinguishers must be serviced annually by a qualified person
- All extinguishers have a maximum lifespan of 10 years from manufacture
- Appropriate fire safety identification signage must be in place above every unit
- Coloured neck rings must be fitted after discharge and refill verification
- All reports and digital certificates must meet full I.S. 291 requirements
- Service labels must be attached to each cylinder with full maintenance details
